About "Denver":

I never thought that I would be so fortunate to have TWO heart dogs in my life. While Bogey (Ch Pond Hollow Casablanca) will ALWAYS hold the most special place in my heart, Denver has a significant spot in it too. He had a great sense of humor, could be goofy and had a little bit of naughtiness in him. He gave tiny “toofis” kisses with his incisors that he bestowed on those he loved. He adored carrying shoes; squeaking his spikey ball till it lost its squeak. Fearless about heights and steps-the cellar and attic steps that stopped everyone else-not him. He had special “gifts” too- “Dendini” for escaping out of his harness without unbuckling; he could find the tiniest things-straight pins etc. The best was finding a silver pinky ring buried for year in the dirt in Maine. We were visiting the Barnum’s in Maine when he came in the cabin with a strange look on his face and his lips pursed. I opened his mouth and there was the ring in it! Jane Barnum started calling him “The Lord of the Rings”. Her niece had lost the ring the summer before !

He was my constant shadow-laid on the bath mat while I showered; slept in bed with us (pillow hog) and traveled across the country with us (he crossed the Continental Divide in CO). Got to swim in the Atlantic, Pacific, the Great Lakes and of course, Chesapeake Bay. My fondest memory of him is with Bill and I in California on Big River. He played on the beach-rolling in the sand, catching Frisbees for the kids and ran in the surf with joy. Later he slept on my lap as we drank wine and listened to the ocean and classical music. He loved pontoon boats and would ride for hours if you let him-just lying watching things go by. He would always tell me when the water bowl needed to be filled-he ONLY drank fresh water. Hated the heat with a passion.

He came from a very accomplished litter. While he finished his Ch title easily- won supported entry sweepstakes/points- he did not enjoy showing. He had the most beautiful head with smiling eyes. Well conformed front and rear with bone and substance. He continued the producing of "clear" deadgrass Chesapeakes. Even in old age at 14.5, his balance of quality conformation was still evident. He was #1 sire in 2012 and had a total of 21 champion offspring; MH titled; MACH; CT, first tracking Ch CBR in Canada; Best in Show son German Retriever Club; International Ch daughter; group placing offspring. He left a mark here and in Europe.

When Bill died, he was my anchor. I loved him fiercely. He loved back in the way a Chesapeake does-he owned me. He had SO MANY names of endearment and he answered to all of them. Denby, The D Man, Denny Do Woop, Toofus Man, Boo Baa, Denzel, Ditty Wad, Boodini-just a few of them. Our/my life would have been so less without him. At the end we both knew it was time. He snuggled close on the bed the last night and I held him close listening to the rain. He was in my arms, wet with my tears, when he closed his eyes one last time. Play well with the other Pond Hollow guys and girls and listen to dad. We WILL meet again.
